The spoonbill is quite closely related to the egret and ibis, all being wader birds. The latter two are considerably more attractive, I think!
The feeding methods of the spoonbill are quite interesting:
- they dip their long flat beaks in the water & swing their heads from side to side, to stir up the mud.
- their beaks are very sensitive so they can detect small fish, shrimps, insects etc. & as soon as they do, the beak snaps shut.
- at the top of the beak there are two slits, which enable the spoonbill to breathe while the beak is mostly submerged in water while foraging for food.
